5.2 Cross Referencing

Cross referencing in Report Authority works similar to Microsoft Word.  A cross reference can return either:

  •        The text between a specific bookmark; or
  •        The page number that a specific bookmark starts in

Creating a Cross Reference

First a bookmark must be created around a piece of text that you wish to cross reference;

..then the cross reference to the bookmark must be inserted.

Cross References and Segments

Usually it is a requirement to cross reference a bookmark that exists in a different segment.  This is possible in Report Authority, however the cross reference will be displayed as “@!” in the report editor which contains only the text and bookmarks from the currently selected segment.

When the document is assembled, it should contain both the bookmark and the cross reference so will be displayed correctly in the output.

In this example, a cross reference to the period end date has been inserted in the header of a segment.  The bookmark exists in a different segment (the cover page), so will be displayed as “@!” in the segment editor.

Typical Uses

  • Automating content such as (entity name or reporting date) in the headers or footers.  Because data objects cannot be inserted into the report headers or footers, cross referencing must be used to automate content within.
  • Where a page number, or range of page numbers (such as “..refer to pages 13 to 24 for…”) must be automated
