7.2 Creating Calculations
Individual calculations can be created manually, or calculations such as sub totals can be created automatically.
Automatic Calculation Creation
Subtotals can be created automatically by first selecting existing data objects in a table:
In the screenshot above, the cells that contained the turnover, cost of sales and gross profit were selected and then the selection was right-clicked. When “Create Subtotal” is selected, the following form appears:
If the ignore other subtotals option is selected, any other subtotal calculations that are included in the selection will be ignored in the creation of the new subtotal.
When OK is clicked, the two gross profit items will have a calculation adaptor with an expression that adds Turnover and cost of sales.
Note that unlike a “SUM()” expression in Excel, each object will be explicitly referenced. If any data object being involved in an expression is deleted and recreated, or if a new row is inserted into a table that needs to be included in the expression, the subtotals will need to be recreated in the same manner.
Manual Calculation Creation
A calculation can be manually created by:
- creating a new data object using the Automation panel; or
- changing the data adaptor of an existing data object using the Value Editor panel.
See Data Objects for creating text, date, and numeric data objects.
