Secondary Tags Panel - Overview

The Secondary Tags panel consists of the secondary tags (dimensions and dimension members) associated with the currently selected primary tag.

Not all primary tags will have associated secondary tags, and not all taxonomies utilise the secondary tags concept. The 6 buttons in the Secondary Tags toolbar are used as follows:

  1. Add Secondary Tag Extension - This will be enabled if the taxonomy supports extensions.  See below for extensons.
  2. Edit Secondary Tag Extension - This will be enabled if you have selected a secondary tag extension and allows you to rename the secondary tag.
  3. Delete Secondary Tag Extension - This will be enabled if you have selected a secondary tag extension and allows you to delete the secondary tag.
  4. Toggle expanded state - If enabled, all dimensions will be fully expanded by default.
  5. Apply Selected Tags – If enabled, the currently selected secondary tags will be remembered, and automatically re-selected (if they exist) each time the primary tag is changed. This can drastically improve performance when tagging tabular type information.
  6. Clear the currently selected secondary tags.

To maximise the available space – the Secondary Tags panel is docked behind the Primary Tags panel by default. Sometimes, however, it is useful to see both panels at the same time when reviewing the dimensionality of taxonomies. In this case, the primary and secondary tags panel can be viewed at the same time by dragging the secondary tags panel and docking beside or underneath the Primary Tags panel.

Dimensions

Secondary tags are logically grouped into “Dimensions”:

Shown here, the individual countries represent the secondary tags which are logically grouped together into a dimension called “Countries”:

Dimension Types

There are two types of dimensions - indicated by their icon:

  1. Explicit dimensions (The top two in the screenshot below)
  2. Typed dimensions (The bottom in the screenshot below)

Explicit Dimensions

Explicit dimensions are dimensions where the secondary tags within them are defined by the taxonomy as in the previous screenshot. These are “locked” and cannot be amended by the user.

Typed Dimensions

Typed dimensions differ from explicit dimensions in that the taxonomy does not define any secondary tags. It is up to the user to first create the custom secondary tags, before using them when tagging.  You can create a custom secondary tag by right-clicking the dimension and selecting Add Custom Secondary Tag:

You can also add custom secondary tags directly in the Custom Secondary Tags panel.

Multiple Dimensions

A primary tag will often contain a number of dimensions which can be used in combination.
To illustrate, the example below is some of the secondary tags attached to the primary tag “Tangible fixed assets” in the UK GAAP taxonomy:

Here, the “Tangible fixed asset classes” and the “Tangible fixed asset ownership” dimensions have been used in combination to tag an item which relates to freehold land and buildings.

Hypercubes

Hypercubes are allowable combinations of dimensions. Most primary tags will be linked to a single hypercube, but some may contain multiple hypercubes.

In the following example, the primary tag “Held-to-maturity investments” in the UK-IFRS taxonomy is linked to the four hypercubes:

Some dimensions may be common across all or some of the hypercubes, but some will be unique. If a secondary tag is selected which does not appear in the other hypercubes, they will be disabled so as to prevent an invalid combination of dimensions:

In the example above, a member of the "Credit ratings" dimension was selected which is unique to the "Credit ratings" Hypercube. The other three Hypercubes have become disables.  To re-enable all Hypercubes, clear the secondary tags selection using the toolbar.
