Tagging Report Content - Overview

Content in a report can be automated and XBRL tagged by the creation of Data Objects.   A data object can contain many XBRL tags of the same data type (nested tags) and must have one of the many Data Adaptors such as Manual (Default), Report Variable, Excel, HFM, Essbase etc.

Data objects are automatically created when:

  • XBRL tags are applied to report content (when the target does not already contain a data object)
  • Data Adaptors are applied from the Automation Panel - described in the Automation section.

Applying an XBRL tag to report content over an existing data object will attach the tag to the data object rather than create a new data object.

Data objects are illustrated in the user interface as "Document Anchors".

The two main activities when tagging are:

  • Selecting the appropriate primary and secondary tags (via the primary and secondary tags panels); and
  • Selecting the target location(s) in the report (via selection in the report itself, or via drag and drop).

There are many strategies to increase the efficiency of tagging, which include the creation of multiple document anchors and tags in a single action. These are discussed in detail in the next series of articles.
