3.2 Segments

New segments are inserted into the currently selected folder.  To add a segment to the root of the outline panel, you must first select the tree’s parent which contains the report name.

Once selected, click the add segment button in the Outline panel or right-click and select New Segment:

Segment properties

  • Name – Must be unique within the current folder in the Outline Panel.
  • Hide – Click this option to hide the segment in the assembled document.
  • Include in hidden section of iXBRL document – For hidden segments, you can elect to include any XBRL tags in the hidden section of the iXBRL document.  This allows you to add information to the report for tagging purposes that you do not want to see in the printed output.  This is useful when mandatory XBRL tags cannot be applied to content on the face of the report.
  • Suppression rule – This allows the assignment of a suppression rule which could suppress the segment from the output in certain circumstances.  See Suppressing a segment
  • Table of contents entry – Type the exact text that you would want to see in the table of content referencing the contents of this segment.   Leave it blank if you do not wish to create another item in the table of contents.

In addition to creating the table of contents entries, the table of contents must also be created – usually in its own segment.  See Table of Contents

Segment types

There are four types of segments:
- Section (Next Page)
- Section (Continuous)
- Page
- Paragraph

Section (Next Page)

Section (Next Page) segments are used for:

  •        Page layout changes such as page and margin sizes and page orientation.
  •        Page headers and footers
  •        Page numbering settings
  •        Report content

The content in these segments will always start at the top of the next page.

Section (Continuous)

Section (Continuous) segments are typically used for when you want to change some page layout properties (such as number of text columns), or the page header that would be repeated on the following page if the content were to span multiple pages, without forcing the content to commence at the top of the following page.  This is typically used in the notes to the accounts where you do not want each note to start on the top of a new page, but you do want a note specific header should the content span multiple pages.

Page and Paragraph

Page or paragraph segments are inserted into the next page or paragraph respectively on assembly. The content within these segments will inherit the page layout properties, page header and footer definitions as well as the page numbering settings from the preceding section (next page and continuous) segments.

Link to Previous Section

These settings are only relevant and enabled for Section (Next Page) and Section (Continuous) segments. If a segment’s header or footer is linked to the previous section segment, then the current segment will inherit the previous section segment's header or footer.

Section segments are usually used for redefining the report headers and in this case, the Headers value must be unchecked and the Footers value must be checked, as page footers usually do not change after they have been initially defined.

Section Page Numbers

These settings are only relevant and enabled for section segments. The document’s page numbers can be redefined in each segment.  The default and most common use will be to continue from the previous section.

It is common to start the page numbering after the table of contents.  To do this, the segment following the table of contents would be a section segment and would have the Start at: = “1” set.  Each section segment following would by default continue from the previous segment, resulting in a single continuous set of page numbers.
