5.1 Validating Reports

DPM Authority can review a completed report by evaluating the list of validation rules incorporated in the XBRL taxonomy. These validation rules will mirror those which will be performed at the respective regulator’s submission gateway.

Validating Reports

Select the Validate Report button in the Processing ribbon to run validations on the entire report:

DPM Authority will first check if there are any inconsistent duplicate fact errors before validating the report. If there are inconsistent duplicate facts present you will be presented with the following form:

In a data point model, an individual fact may appear on more than one table.  In an XBRL instance, it is not possible to determine from which table a duplicate fact originates since duplicate facts contain the exact same XBRL tag. Duplicate facts are only inserted into the XBRL instance once regardless of how many times they appear across the set of tables being submitted. (See Duplicate Facts for more information).

We recommend first resolving duplicate fact errors before trying to resolve any validation failures as some duplicate fact errors can result in validation failures that would have passed if the all duplicate facts were consistent.

  • Yes - Continue to the validations pane where only inconsistent duplicate fact errors will be displayed.

Please note: you will need to select the Validate Report button again once the inconsistent duplicate fact errors have been resolved in order to display all validation failures.
  • No - Continue to the validations pane where inconsistent duplicate fact errors as well as validation failures will be displayed.

You should still clear the inconsistent duplicate fact errors before trying to resolve the other validation failures.

Validations pane

Drag the validation pane title to change its docking position.  It is often useful to temporarily dock it side by side with the report to assist with the clearing of validation errors.  This can be done by dragging the title and dropping it on an arrow to the left or right of the centre box (it can be re-docked behind the report by dropping it on the centre box):

If you have multiple screens, it can be useful to drag the entire pane to the other screen.  The same applies to the other panels such as the taxonomy panel.

  • Result - Severity of the failure.

    Rules are classified as:
    • Blocking (Error) - Blocking validation failures will prevent your submission from being accepted at the regulator's submission gateway.
    • Non-blocking (Warning) - Non-blocking validation failures will not result in your submission being rejected at the regulator's submission gateway, but should be considered as they indicate a possible error with your data.
    • Inconsistent duplicate facts - each data point represents a fact but that fact may be represented by more than one data point and appear on more than one table. These facts should be the same value and you will receive an inconsistent duplicate fact error when duplicate facts do not match in your report. (See Duplicate Facts for more information).
  • Category - Label of the validation rule.
  • Enriched Taxonomy Messages - Describes the formula and description of the rule as per the regulator.
  • Validation Message - Shows the formula of the validation rule with missing values represented by “NotReported".
  • Expression - Shows the formula with the actual numeric values from the report.
  • Evaluation Result - Shows the difference between what is calculated by the formula and the expected calculation.

Grouping

To group the results, drag any of the headers to orange bar above the header.

The below Validations pane has been grouped by Result, then by Category. This is very useful to see the failures per table.

Clicking on a validation failure will highlight the data points in the Tables pane.

Filtering

DPM Authority data grids contain powerful filtering functionality that can be used to search for specific data points across all rules. In the example below, DPM Authority will filter the validation results to all those that have failed and contain the data point “*r010*”.

Exporting of results

As with all DPM Authority data grids, you can export the results in a number of formats including Excel, csv, XML etc. Click the Export Validation Results button in the Output ribbon to choose a format and export the list of validations results.
